900lbs and Creative Partners Deliver Projection Mapping Experience on Washington Monument to Launch America’s 250th Year
1/7/2026
DALLAS — A coalition of leading experience design and live-event production firms helped launch America’s 250th year on New Year’s Eve, transforming the Washington Monument into a massive, immersive projection-mapped storytelling experience seen by audiences on the National Mall and around the world.
Texas-based 900lbs played a central creative role in the project, collaborating with national partners LMGSI, DCE, ESI and Yellow Dog Party to deliver the six-night projection mapping experience that marked the official kickoff of the U.S. semiquincentennial.
“Telling America’s story on a national monument of this scale is both an honor and a responsibility,” said Steve Deitz, CEO and founder of 900lbs. “This project demanded an extraordinary level of creative precision, technical coordination and collaboration. To see work developed by our team and our partners come to life on the National Mall was a defining moment for everyone involved.”
Rising 555 feet tall and mapped across all four sides of the monument, the projection transformed the historic structure into a luminous canvas illustrating pivotal moments from America’s 250-year history. The content blended large-scale animation, motion graphics, custom audio and voiceover to create a fully immersive experience tailored to the monument’s unique geometry and vertical scale.
The Washington Monument served as a dynamic storytelling surface, with visual sequences depicting themes of discovery, innovation, service and resilience. Content highlights included interpretations of the Wright brothers’ first flight, the sacrifices of U.S. veterans and Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb rendered using a mix of 2D, 2.5D and 3D animation techniques engineered specifically for the monument’s proportions and sightlines.
“Projection mapping creates a shared experience at a scale few mediums can achieve,” Deitz said. “You’re standing inside the story. That sense of scale and collective presence is especially powerful for a milestone like America’s 250th year.”
The projection marked the opening moment of a yearlong slate of events planned throughout 2026 to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the nation’s enduring ideals. The event was produced in partnership with Freedom 250, the national organization leading the country’s semiquincentennial observance.
