A Moving Display
By Ben Barclay
In the near future, 5G is set to transform the way we live, work, and play. And Intel Corp. needed a powerful exhibit at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain, to communicate how the company's cutting-edge offerings impact everyday lives. "Intel wanted to leverage technology in a way that brought together the exhibit's four live 'super demo' destinations and interactive messaging into one coherent, compelling storytelling experience," said Andy Sexton, creative director at 2LK Design Ltd.
Sound Reasoning
To ensure the soundscape accompanying Intel Corp.'s 82-foot-wide "story wall" didn't overwhelm visitors, a localized audio system was developed. As a 10-foot-wide LED screen slid in front of one of the exhibit's so-called "super demos," the system triggered the soundtrack to increase in volume at that specific locale and fade to unobtrusive levels elsewhere.
The solution took the form of an inventive, eye-popping centerpiece. Drawing inspiration from augmented reality's ability to layer digital content over physical objects – much like 5G technologies are digitally layered onto cities – 2LK devised a stunning 16.5-foot-tall "story wall." The 82-foot-wide installation comprised 125 white-painted wood panels. Leaving a small gap between the panels gave the impression of a gridded map of Barcelona onto which eight 4K projectors cast dynamic video content and messaging. Atop a track just in front of the partition, a sliding 10-foot-wide LED screen provided a final layer of digital content. On every pass, the LED screen stopped in front of each of the live "super demo" destinations and provided content specific to that industry sector, requiring precision choreography for the projectors to mask off portions of the wall as the LED panel passed by.
Because of the story wall's colossal size and position, it was always visible to booth visitors whether they were engaged in a demo, exploring the stand, or relaxing in the second-story VIP lounge. "It's so much more than a massive wall with amazing content," said one judge, who like the rest was blown away by the moving display. E
